Decision guide

How to choose the correct certificate

01

Is the kitchen permanently installed?

A permanently installed commercial kitchen normally follows the CP42 route.

02

Can the catering unit be moved?

Food trucks, trailers, vans and other genuinely mobile units normally follow the CP44 route.

03

What fuel is used?

Natural gas or LPG may be used in fixed premises. Mobile units are commonly supplied by LPG cylinders.

04

Is the setup temporary or semi-permanent?

Temporary cabins, event kitchens and semi-permanent units may need individual assessment before booking.

Fixed kitchens using LPG

LPG does not automatically mean CP44

A fixed commercial kitchen may use LPG cylinders or a bulk LPG supply and still follow the CP42 route. The installation type and how the premises operate remain important.

Temporary and unusual installations

Some setups need individual assessment

Temporary kitchens, semi-permanent trailers, cabins, containers and converted structures may not fit neatly into a simple fixed-or-mobile description. Confirm the arrangement before booking.

Common certificate questions

What is the main difference between CP42 and CP44?

CP42 is generally used for fixed commercial catering premises. CP44 is generally used for mobile catering units such as trailers, food trucks and vans.

Can a fixed commercial kitchen use LPG?

Yes. A fixed commercial kitchen may use LPG and still follow the CP42 route, provided the engineer holds the required LPG, catering and appliance competencies.

Does a catering trailer always need CP44?

A genuinely mobile catering trailer will normally follow the CP44 route. A permanently installed or substantially altered unit may need individual assessment.

What certificate does a converted horsebox need?

A converted horsebox used as a mobile catering unit will generally follow the CP44 route, subject to its installation, fuel and how it is operated.

What about a temporary kitchen at an event?

Temporary catering installations can vary considerably. Confirm the installation type, fuel, appliances and operating arrangement before booking.

Do CP42 and CP44 include repairs?

No. The published inspection prices do not automatically include servicing, repairs, replacement parts or remedial work unless expressly stated.
